Welham Girls’ School is one of the oldest and most reputed girls boarding schools in Dehradun, Uttarakhand which is affiliated to CISCE i.e. Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations.
The School promotes multi-cultural and secular values among its students and encourages them to choose a harder right path instead of the easier wrong.
Miss Linnell, the founder principal of Welham Girls’ High School, gave the school motto ‘Aartha Shanti Phala Vidya’ which means ‘The aim of education is to bring peace’. It wonderfully embodies the spirit of Welham’s.
The school has five houses named after popular birds found in the doon valley: Bulbuls, Flycatchers, Hoopoes, Orioles, and Woodpeckers.
Welham Girls’ has multiple clubs such as Nature Club, Quiz Club, etc., and societies for the overall development of the students.
History – Welham Girls’ School
“Be the change you want to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi
In the newly independent India, there were still very few educational platforms for young Indian women.
Back in the 1950s, an elderly English lady H. S. Oliphant, inspired by The Lawrence School, Sanawar, conceived the idea of a school of similar quality for the girls around Dehradun.
Oliphant recruited another retired English woman, Grace Mary Linnel, and founded Welham Girls’ School.
Initially, there was a lack of funds, staff & other necessary infrastructure still the school has seen tremendous growth from ten students to around 550 students.
